Yale University School of Art

It's been a hectic spring...waiting to hear back from the graduate programs I applied to, going through the interview process, waiting to get the final results...And it all ended up in the best way possible! I was accepted to Yale University School of Art MFA Program in Photography! I can't wait to meet other 8 students who were accepted to the program as well (David Bush, Lucas Foglia, Kate Green, Tatiana Grigorenko, Curran Hatleberg, Tiffani Hooper, Rory Mulligan, and Monika Sziladi) and to see in which direction will this stimulating environment take my work.

Breathing in Kabwe

After months of working on my portfolio from Zambia, I finally found a way to combine both verbal and visual text on a single print. My friend Donald Mengay wrote a beautiful memoir of our experiences in Kabwe, and I used that essay as a base for the text I handwrote alongside the images. It is definitely not a typical documentary portfolio. It is not meant to be only about "us" or "them" as representatives of two very distinct cultures, but about the relationship between the two. How we saw Kabweans, and how Kabweand saw us.

Back from Zambia...

What an experience that was! I never expected to come back to New York with more than a good portfolio. However, during my stay in Kabwe I had to deal with my fear of failing to deliver superb images, my obsessive need to be in full control, my biases I never even knew I had, and my hosts' biases who saw me only as a passerby with a fancy camera who never had (so they thought) to deal with the problems of sheer survival to the extent they did. A number of times I wanted to give up and return home, but I pushed myself to stay...And I am so glad I did! Now when this part of the project is behind me, I have to find a way to present the photographs in a way that will reflect my full experience: both visual and emotional.
